December 22, 2009 was one of the most amazing days of my life. It was the day I became a Mommy! Here is BJ's birth story:
Monday December 21, 2009
4:00pm - 38 wk prenatal appt with Dr. Brown. 0 cm dialated, 50% effaced. Dr. Brown said she doesn't expect anything to happen anytime soon and she would see us the following Monday at our next appt.

12:20am - lost my mucous plug in bed.
12:30am - first contraction
12:30am-2:00am - contractions every 11-25 minutes, very irregular. I am also using the restroom very frequently.
2:00am - Brian awakes to ask if everything is okay. I told him that I didn't want to worry him but I might be in labor :)
2:00am-9:00am - contractions continue (between 9 minutes and 15 minutes apart). I fall asleep periodically, which makes me believe I'm not in labor. I mean, who sleeps through contractions?!
9:00am - I call the OB/GYN to let them know what is happening. They tell me to go to Labor and Delivery to get checked out. I should get there by 11:00am
9:00-10:40 - I hop in the shower. I have one contraction before I get in, two in the shower, and two while I'm blow-drying my hair. The contractions are getting more intense...I need to stop what I'm doing to focus while the contraction happens. Brian is getting VERY nervous! We gather everything else we needed for our hospital bags and call our parents to let them know we were going to the hospital to get checked out. I start vomitting after contractions. Not pretty.
10:40am - We head to the hospital. Brian starts timing my contractions in the car (I had been timing them previously). I had one in front of our house, one at the end of our trailer park, and one at the stop light less than a mile from our home - that's only 2-3 minutes apart! We still had a 35 minute drive in front of us!
11:20am - Arrive at the hospital, successfully avoiding most of the holiday traffic (the hospital is right next to a large mall). We park in the "hey, I'm having a baby right now" parking spot. Brian wheels me up to Labor & Delivery where I throw-up while checking in. They were extra busy and did not have a room available for me. So Brian and I sit in the hallway. Fun times.
I'm not quite sure of the timeline for the rest of the events but here's what transpired next:
My water breaks while we were sitting in the hallway. Brian lets the front desk know and very quickly I'm shown into a Triage room. The nurse confirmed the rupture of amniotic fluid. I am 4-5 centimeters dialated. I get sent to our Labor and Delivery room and meet our AMAZING nurse Mollie. I already agreed to an epidural (contractions hurt!) so my fluids and blood work were done immediately. After the lab work was completed (maybe 30 minutes) the anesthesiologist came in. I was very focused on my labor that I didn't even acknowledge his presence! The epidural was administered but it only took to the left side (because I was lying on my left side for comfort). After we fixed the epidural Nurse Mollie checked me and I was 10 cm! We were ready to push! My doctor was on her way but mall traffic held her up a bit. I started pushing at 3:30pm. Mollie predicted we would have our baby by 5pm. A mirror was positioned so I could see the birth. It was hard for me to push and look at the same time...I push with my eyes closed! Dr. Brown gave me an episiotomy (I didn't feel a thing) and out popped a very hairy head! At 5:07pm our baby was born! I asked the doctor not to announce the gender - I wanted Brian to tell me. And Brian let me know we had a son.
